Bhai Phonta Campaign

Advertiser: The Wall
Copywriter: Rwitayan Mukherjee
Creative Note:
The Wall, one of Kolkata’s top-rated Chinese & Oriental restaurant wanted to advertise a special menu on the occasion of Bhai Dooj. As part of the ritual, brothers are blessed with a tika and grains of wheat and blades of Dubbo grass on their foreheads and heads, respectively. The campaign simply used this age old tradition in startling visuals of iconic Chinese. The line too is another pop-culture reference which takes a dig at the Sino-Indian relationship.

The ad picked up the Silver in the POP Category at
SANGBAD PRATIDIN’s SRIJAN SAMMAN 2012.

Creative Note: The ad was slated to release the day after India won the world cup. The headline translates to, “1.2 billion’s nirvana”. The body copy roughly translates to, “For a country where cricket is religion, today’s a festival.” The stark visual supports the same idea.

Creative Note: Bhai Phonta or Bhai Dooj is celebrated in Bengal, with the sisters extending their arms and using their little fingers to plant a tika on their brothers’ forehead. While they do this, they are supposed to utter a good luck charm, “Jom Duar-e porlo kNata”, rougly translating to “May the doors of death be closed shut”. The headline says, “Jom Duar-e porlo kNata”, the word “kNata” in Bengali also means fork! The visual shows a fork, replicating the act of planting the tika, exactly as a sister’s hand would.

The ad picked up the Gold in the 50cc Colour Ad category at SANGBAD PRATIDIN’s SRIJAN SAMMAN 2011.
